I remember it vividly. 10 years old, living in California. We were on the way to Universal Studios. I was with my friend Henrik, and his Dad asked the classic question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” which I always struggled to answer. I began to describe my interests. Drawing, building things, design. Just then, we were passing this abstract building, overlooking the highway and downtown Los Angeles. “I would love to make something like that” I said. “Oh! So you like Architecture” Henrik’s dad said. I’m not sure I had heard the word before that, but it stuck then, and I haven’t forgotten it since. My work as a photographer and filmmaker always brings me back to this moment, and I’ve been using these formats as a medium to understand architecture. I hope to create visuals that describe the building, but also tell stories, themes, and the impact that buildings have on people. I can only hope to elicit empathy, by sharing my experiences and deep love for architecture. - Jonathan Martine
